The goals of reconstructive surgery are different from those of cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery of the face is performed on abnormalities in appearance caused by birth defects, injury or trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. The goal is to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.

By 80 years of age one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of such high incidence it is not uncommon to have a family member or close friend who has been afflicted with the disease. For those recently diagnosed, currently receiving treatment, or continuing life after breast cancer, the impact could not be more direct.
